LONDON – (17 March 2008) – On Sunday members of the Board of Deputies of British Jews stood together against racism and extremism to send a message to those that advocate the politics of hate. A new campaign, with the slogan, Your Voice or Theirs, was launched to encourage the wider Jewish Community to register to vote in the forthcoming local elections.
The elections due to be held on May 1st across the UK could provide an unprecedented platform to the British National Party, especially if they prove to be successful in the London Assembly.
The Board of Deputies of British Jews exists to protect and defend the rights and freedoms of British Jewry. These same rights and freedoms have evolved over many years and are enjoyed by Jews in Great Britain today. But events are seldom static. Changes to legislation, campaigns by special interest groups, outright attacks on Jews and Israel–all require a concerted response.
As the community’s representative organisation, the Board of Deputies is able to engage with government, the media and wider society, providing a vehicle through which British Jews have a voice.
