Leo Baeck College celebrated the Ordination of six new progressive Rabbis on Sunday 29th June at the Liberal Jewish Synagogue, St John’s Wood. It was the culmination of their five-year rabbinic training programme, and the Ordinands (four men and two women) represent a new cadre of rabbis and teachers for the 21st century. They come from very different backgrounds.
Of the six Larry Becker (1st on the right) originally came from Cleveland Ohio, and was member of a large Reform congregation headed by Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver. His first degree was in History, and Larry used his skills to teach in a Cleveland inner city school and the Juvenile Detention Home. After moving to Israel, living on Kibbutz Eiv Zivan and serving in the artillery branch of the Israeli army, Larry moved to England to start a new career. Following his Ordination, Larry will be working with us at Sukkat Shalom Reform Synagogue starting sometime in July .
