Honorary Life President

Frank Godson - Honorary Life President

After the Annual General in November 2007 a Special meeting was held in order to propose and a elect a member of the synagogue as Honorary Life President

The chair of Council convened the meeting and spoke as follows “ Its not too often that one gets to do something really nice for someone, all too often we moan or complain about people. On this occasion I have not slept for two nights with excitement of what I am about to do now.

I want us to acknowledge the vision and commitment of one person which has resulted in what we have around us here and now. Our beautiful synagogue.

None would I hope disagree about this person's energy, enthusiasm and dedication in all areas of Sukkat Shalom life.

From attending Council, RAC, Education and Finance meetings to editing the Shema from handling lettings signing up new members. From attending to building works and maintenance to supporting the choir. Also attending JJBS meetings and numerous other synagogue related meetings. Helping with the organising of the High Holyday Appeal, taking Services

Truly this is a person of vast talent and bottomless reserves of energy. Is there nothing that he cannot turn his hand too. The extraordinary thing is that he does this not for personal gain or recognition but selflessly because he cares about this community and he wants the best for it.

I do hope that I have managed to keep this a surprise and that I have organised it all correctly and according to the Constitution.”

Finally she said “It now falls upon me to propose that we bestow the new office of Honorary Life President on Frank Godson a man who we all respect and love and who deserves to be recognised for his undisputed guardianship of Sukkat Shalom for all of its History”.

This proposition was seconded by Sue Barnett and was carried by a show of hands. The result was met with applause.

Frank Godson was asked to say a few words which he did showing considerable embarrassment.

He was delighted to receive the honour and stressed that he worked for the community because he cared about it and wanted to see it succeed and still be around in another 26 years.

He said that he had never tried to hold on to offices and would be delighted if new people would come forward and take over the reins.

When the synagogue started he was 38 and now he was 64. He felt it was about time some younger members came forward and helped to run the community.

He was delighted that so many new people had come onto Council at this AGM

He thanked Jocelyn for her efforts in this regard.
