On Erev Shavuot about 50 people stayed behind at the synagogue after the service to hear Rabbi Dr Michael Shire give a talk on Pioneers of Progressive Judaism from 1810 till today. Purim and Fanaticism

Larry Becker

Purim is today a time of great celebration and fun but lying below the surface is a story that reflects a deeper reality. This is the reality of bigotry, fanaticism and hatred that infects every people and every land and whose consequences are inevitably death and destruction. Within living memory we have seen the Shoah as well as horrendous massacres in Cambodia and Rwanda.

Tu B'Shevat

Tubshvat 2009 (4).JPG

On Sunday, 8th February 2009, we celebrated Tu B,Shevat (the New Year for Trees) together with our near neighbours at Woodford Progressive Synagogue. A special Seder Service suitable for everyone of all ages was held at Marlborough Road, South Woodford.

It was led by our Rabbi Larry Becker and Rabbi Richard Jacobi of Woodford Progressive. There was a Chavurah meal afterwards and about 50 people attended including many children from our Cheder. It was a very successful event and was enjoyed by all who attended.

Model Seder

The synagogue Cheder organised a Model Seder during April on a normal Cheder morning. Due to the holidays falling at odd times this year a number of children were absent. However those that did attend found it a very enjoyable experience.

The proceedings were conducted by Mitzi Kalinsky one of the teachers at the Cheder

Planting the Holly bushes

There was a tree planting in the synagogue grounds where Reeva Godson assisted the children in planting holly bushes.

The synagogue then held a "Fruit Seder" in order to celebrate the festival for trees. The children from the cheder along with parents and teachers attended and Mitzi Kalinsky officiated. The morning was concluded with some dancing.
