Paul Yogi Mayer - Youth Leader Brady Boys Club - Obituary

Yogi.jpg

Paul Yogi Mayer died in July 2011. Yogi as he was affectionally known was born in 1912 and grew up in the Rhineland-Pfalz region in Germany. He was a very independent young man in Germany at a time when it did not bode well for Jews exercising their human rights as individuals and citizens of the country. This independence led to Yogi being summoned before the notorious Head of Gestapo, Chief Reinhard Heydrich, who forbade him to speak in any public or closed meetings.. As he grew up he had no bitterness towards the Germany of his childhood in spite of evading arrest for political activities and having to emigrate with his wife Ilse and child Thomas to London in 1939.

WJR Japan Earthquake and Tsunami Appeal

Following the devastating earthquake and tsunami on Friday 11 March which measured 8.9 on the Richter scale, the fifth largest recorded in history, Japan faces a growing humanitarian crisis.

The official death toll stands at 2400 with many more missing and injured and the numbers are expected to rise. More than a million homes are without power and water, hundreds of thousands have been displaced and a huge response operation is underway. The scale of needs is almost incomprehensible.

Adding to the growing concerns the Japanese government has warned that radiation levels at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant have increased to reach levels harmful to human health, leading to further displacement of people.
